Questions to ask a medical tourism coordinator

Understand the treatment provider, coordination scope and follow-up arrangements separately. Use these questions to request the right information from the right person before making a clinical decision.

Who will provide the treatment?

Ask for the healthcare organisation and clinician’s names and where their professional credentials can be checked. Clarify what the coordinator handles and which questions go directly to the clinical team.

This page does not claim a partnership with a particular hospital or doctor. The CDC medical tourism resource also addresses pre-travel assessment and continuity of care.

What should the clinical consultation establish?

Ask the treating clinical team about the proposed procedure, alternatives, individual risks, anaesthesia needs and recovery plan. A marketing description cannot determine whether treatment is appropriate for you.

Check that the quoted procedure matches the plan discussed clinically. Ask how a changed treatment plan, revised costs and consent would be handled.

What does the quotation and coordination include?

Separate healthcare charges from accommodation, transfers, interpretation and coordination fees. Request a written account of who provides each element and when additional costs may arise.

Discuss travel dates, fitness to fly and required length of stay with the clinical team; do not assume one recovery period applies to all procedures. Identify companion and accessibility needs separately.

How will follow-up and unexpected problems be handled?

Ask for the clinical out-of-hours contact, where to seek care if something unexpected happens and the follow-up arrangements after returning home. In an emergency, contact local emergency medical services rather than waiting for a coordinator to respond.

Clarify the language of procedure and discharge records, how to share them with your own clinician and any follow-up charges. This guide does not provide clinical advice or guarantee outcomes.
