GERMANY · APPLYING AS A RETIREE

A Germany visa for retirees: how to show income and purpose.

Retirement is not a separate visa type; a retired applicant also applies for a short-stay Schengen visa (tourist or visit) according to the purpose of travel. This guide focuses on how a non-working retiree can consistently demonstrate income, a cost plan and ties that support an intention to return.

Prepared for retired applicants planning short-stay travel from Türkiye. Conditions vary with your purpose of travel, income situation and any sponsor.

Retirement is not a separate visa; purpose and income are what matter.

Short answer

There is no special Germany visa for retirees. If your purpose is a holiday you apply for a tourist visa; if it is to visit a relative in Germany, a visit visa. As a retired applicant, your difference is that you show income with pension and savings documents rather than employment documents. The purpose, duration and cost plan of the trip must be consistent, and ties that support an intention to return matter. This page is about correct preparation, not an advantage or an automatic right.

SCOPE

What does this page cover?

This page focuses on the profile preparation of a retired applicant; the full document list is on the required documents page.

On this page

How a non-working retiree shows income, a cost plan and ties for returning; the difference between self-funded and sponsored applications.

Not on this page

The full list of common documents (on the required documents page) and the purpose-specific application process (on the tourist/visit pages). This page does not repeat them; it links to them.

Assumption

The basis is an applicant who is not working and travels on a pension and/or savings. If you still have an income-generating job, employment documents also apply.

SCENARIOS

Two typical situations

Self-funded travel

If your pension and savings cover the travel and accommodation costs, you show them with current documents (pension statements, account activity).

Sponsored / invited travel

If a relative in Germany covers the costs, a formal undertaking (Verpflichtungserklärung) or an informal invitation applies within the visit framework. In that case follow the invitation rules on the visit page.

Ties for returning

Because there is no employment tie in retirement, consistently presenting ties that support the intention to return — residence, family, property or regular income — becomes more important.

DOCUMENTS

Documents specific to the retiree profile

The following strengthen a retired applicant's profile; see the required documents page for the common documents.

income

  • Pension documentsA current document/statement showing the pension payment.
  • Bank statementsAccount activity for the last 3 months; savings can be shown if available.

travel

  • Travel and accommodationA round-trip reservation/plan and a hotel booking (or accommodation proof for a visit).

insurance

  • Travel health insuranceAn original policy valid across the whole Schengen area with at least 30,000 EUR cover.

Share sensitive documents about your health status only when necessary and through the official channel. Document lists can be updated by the official source.

CAUTION

Points to watch for a retiree application

  • Retirement is not an automatic advantageBeing retired does not provide a separate status or guarantee that eases the application; the assessment still looks at purpose, income and document consistency.
  • The cost plan must be realisticIncome and planned travel costs must be consistent; an exaggerated or undocumented plan may be assessed negatively.
  • No guaranteeComplete documents do not mean approval; the mission makes the decision.
FREQUENTLY ASKED

Retiree application questions

Is there a separate Germany visa for retirees?

No. Retirees also apply for a short-stay Schengen visa (tourist or visit) according to the purpose of travel. The difference is that income is shown with pension and savings documents rather than employment documents.

I am not working — how do I show income?

You show it with a pension statement and the last 3 months of bank account activity. If a relative covers the costs, a formal undertaking or an informal invitation is used within the visit framework.

Is there a specific bank balance requirement?

A fixed 'balance threshold' circulating in public is not verified on this page. What matters is that income and the cost plan are consistent with the trip; check the current conditions from the official source.
