To take part in a cultural event, a congress or a sporting event in Germany, you apply for a short-stay Schengen visa. This guide separates the scenarios of an athlete, a team member, a speaker and an event participant; it focuses on the organiser's invitation, the purpose of participation and who covers the costs.

Short answer
Participating in a cultural event, a congress or a sporting event is done with a short-stay Schengen visa. For cultural events and congresses, the organiser's invitation or a contract with the cultural-service provider is essential; for sporting events, the invitation from the sports club/federation or a participation certificate, together with the certificate from the sending Turkish club/federation. These documents state the organiser and venue details, the period and type of the event and the participant's details. Paid artistic performance may be assessed differently; see the artists page.

For cultural/sporting participation, Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) consent is not required in this scope. Document lists can be updated by the official sources.
Points to watch in an event application
- Paid work cannot be generalisedThe conditions for paid performance or professional activity are different; do not treat them as cultural participation, and confirm paid activity with the official source.
- Role must match the documentsThe role, period and purpose in the invitation and documents must be consistent with the rest of the application.

Event visa questions
What documents are needed for a cultural/sporting event?
For cultural events and congresses, the organiser's invitation or a cultural-service contract; for sporting events, the club/federation invitation together with the certificate from the sending Turkish club/federation. Both state the period, type and participant details.
Is Employment Agency consent required?
For cultural and sporting events and congress participation, Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) consent is not required in this scope. If paid artistic work falls under an employment category, consent may be required.
