GERMANY · PARTNER VISIT

Visiting a partner in Germany: separate a short visit from settling.

To see your partner (boyfriend/girlfriend) in Germany for a short time, you apply for a Schengen visa within the visit framework. This guide separates a short visit from the purpose of marriage/family reunification/settlement, and helps you present the invitation, the relationship and the travel purpose consistently.

Prepared for people who want to make a short visit to their partner in Germany from Türkiye. Conditions vary with the inviter's situation and how documentable your relationship is.

Germany partner visit visa and invitation illustrationGERMANY / DEUTSCHLAND
A short visit is one path; marriage and settlement are another.

Short answer

There is no separate official 'partner visa'. To see your partner in Germany for up to 90 days, you apply for a short-stay Schengen visa within the visit framework. This is prepared with an invitation (a formal undertaking or an informal invitation) and a consistent account of the relationship and the travel purpose. If you want to marry or settle in Germany, that is a separate, long-stay (national) process and outside the scope of this page. This page does not repeat the general visit guide; it focuses on the partner scenario.

SCOPE

Which purpose is on this page?

This page focuses on a short visit; marriage and settlement are a different path.

On this page

Visiting your partner for up to 90 days; the invitation, relationship consistency and explaining the purpose of travel.

Not on this page

Marrying or settling in Germany: these fall under the long-stay (national) visa and residence category. The full set of general invitation rules is also on the family and friends visit page; it is not repeated here.

Defining the relationship

For unmarried partners, the relationship is reasonably documented in the context of a short visit; every couple's situation is specific to them.

CONDITIONS

Settle these before applying

The purpose must be a short visit

The stay must not exceed 90 days and the purpose must be a visit. If your purpose is marriage/settlement, the correct path is a national (D) visa; the wrong category is refused.

The invitation route

Your inviting partner can arrange a formal undertaking at the Ausländerbehörde or provide an informal invitation containing specific details. Detailed invitation rules are on the visit page.

Consistency

The relationship, the travel purpose, accommodation and the cost plan must be consistent with one another and with the application form.

DOCUMENTS

Documents specific to a partner visit

The following strengthen the partner scenario; for all common and invitation documents, see the required documents and family and friends visit pages.

invitation

  • Formal undertaking or informal invitationAn original formal undertaking (Verpflichtungserklärung) arranged by the inviter at the Ausländerbehörde (no older than 6 months), or an informal invitation stating the duration of stay, the relationship, the inviter's passport/ID number, date and signature.

relationship

  • Reasonable evidence of the relationshipReasonable evidence supporting the continuity of the relationship, such as previous trips together or communication history (depending on the case).

travel

  • Accommodation and travelStaying at the partner's address via the formal undertaking; otherwise an accommodation document and a round-trip reservation/plan.

Relationship documents are not a mandatory list in every case; the aim is to present a consistent and reasonable application. Document lists can be updated by the official source.

CAUTION

Points to watch for a partner visit

  • The right categoryA short visit must not be confused with marriage/settlement; if your purpose is permanent, the national visa and residence path applies.
  • Intention to returnA visit visa is for a temporary stay; ties that support the intention to return at the end of the trip matter.
  • No guaranteeComplete documents do not mean approval; the mission makes the decision.
FREQUENTLY ASKED

Partner visit questions

Is there a 'partner visa' for Germany?

There is no separate official 'partner visa'. To see your partner for a short time, you apply for a Schengen visa within the visit framework. If your purpose is marriage or settlement, a different, long-stay path is followed.

How do I document our relationship?

For unmarried partners there is no single mandatory list; the continuity of the relationship can be supported with reasonable evidence such as an invitation, a history of trips together or communication. What matters is the consistency of the application.

Can I stay in Germany after the visit?

A short-stay visit visa is not for settlement or marriage. Those purposes fall under the national (D) visa and residence category; for the correct path, see that category.
